Cory Booker and Republican nominee Justin Murphy won New Jersey’s Senate primaries and will face each other in November. Murphy won a crowded Republican primary despite having almost no campaign cash, while Booker ran unopposed and holds a substantial fundraising advantage.
Booker and Murphy secured their parties’ nominations in Tuesday’s primaries. Murphy won with just over 33 percent of the vote, while his closest opponent, Richard Tabor, received about 29 percent. Booker ran unopposed in the Democratic primary.
The article says the general-election race is expected to favor Booker, noting his more than $22 million in cash on hand and that New Jersey has not elected a Republican to the Senate since 1972. Murphy’s campaign reported negative $24 in cash on hand to the Federal Election Commission. The Cook Political Report rated the race “solid Democrat.”
