Bernie Sanders said Tuesday that he urged Graham Platner to leave Maine’s Senate race after a report of an alleged sexual assault. Several other Democrats have withdrawn support or also called for Platner to step aside, while Troy Jackson filed to run for the seat.
Sanders said he recommended that Platner step aside in light of what he called serious allegations. The report, published by Politico on Monday, said Jenny Racicot alleged that Platner had sex with her against her will while they were dating in 2021. Platner denied the allegations and said he was reflecting on the best path forward. Sanders had been a prominent supporter of Platner’s campaign for the seat held by Susan Collins.
Elizabeth Warren, Chris Van Hollen and Ruben Gallego had withdrawn their endorsements, while Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand also called on Platner to step aside. Our Revolution, an organization founded by Sanders, was planning to endorse Troy Jackson, who filed paperwork to run for the seat Tuesday. The organization said Jackson’s platform most resembled Platner’s.
