Former Vice President Kamala Harris endorsed Troy Jackson, newly selected as Maine Democrats’ U.S. Senate candidate, in a race Democrats say they need to win to regain Senate control. Jackson’s campaign said it is working to close a fundraising gap with Republican Sen. Susan Collins.
Harris endorsed Jackson in a Monday fundraising email, saying he would have 101 days between his nomination and Election Day and urging Democrats to support him. Jackson was selected at a special convention after Graham Platner, the winner of the June primary, withdrew from the race. Democrats are counting on a win in Maine, along with victories in other Republican-held seats and holds elsewhere, to have a chance to regain Senate control.
Jackson’s campaign said it had raised $2 million since he secured the nomination and was working to make up a fundraising deficit against Collins, who had raised more than $16 million. Collins’ spokesperson mocked the endorsement, comparing Harris’ and Jackson’s paths to becoming nominees.
