Florida Republicans’ decision to qualify only Byron Donalds for a gubernatorial debate has drawn criticism from Gov. Ron DeSantis and other candidates. Donalds’ campaign defended the decision, while the dispute has become a flashpoint in the governor’s race.
The Republican Party of Florida said Donalds was the only candidate who met its debate qualifications: at least 10% support in party polling, more than $10 million raised and more than 10,000 donors. DeSantis criticized the decision, saying it could be counterproductive, and later accused state party chair Evan Power of insulting Republican voters’ intelligence. Donalds’ campaign said it was not his job to legitimize campaigns without meaningful support.
Other candidates also challenged the debate decision. Paul Renner questioned whether the party still believed in free competition, and Jay Collins said voters should take notice if Donalds did not attend a debate. James Fishback staged a weekend event urging Donalds to debate him; Attorney General James Uthmeier criticized Fishback for calling Donalds, who is Black, a slave. Sen. Rick Scott also criticized Fishback at an event condemning antisemitism.
