Vice President J.D. Vance campaigned at a Greensboro rally for Senate candidate Michael Whatley, criticizing Democratic opponent Roy Cooper and urging voters to support Whatley. Cooper’s campaign disputed Vance’s attacks, while a cited poll showed Cooper leading Whatley.
Vance urged voters to elect Whatley, saying Republicans need him in the Senate to advance the Trump administration’s agenda. Whatley said he wants to fight for a strong economy, border security, safe communities and a strong military. About 300 people attended the rally. Vance also criticized Cooper’s record as governor, including on elections and crime, and said Cooper’s decisions put public safety at risk.
An Elon University poll conducted Aug. 21–31 found Cooper leading Whatley among likely voters, 49% to 38%. Cooper’s campaign spokesperson rejected the case for Whatley and criticized his ties, policy positions and lobbying. The candidates were campaigning ahead of the November election.
