Rep. Ralph Norman challenged President Donald Trump’s endorsement of Darline Graham in South Carolina’s Republican Senate runoff, arguing that his experience and record make him the stronger candidate. The Aug. 25 runoff winner will face Democrat Annie Andrews in November.
In an Associated Press interview, Norman called Trump’s endorsement of Graham a “head scratcher.” Norman argued that voters had not had enough time to assess Graham and criticized her for not participating in debates. Graham, appointed interim senator after her brother Lindsey Graham’s death, said she had accomplished much in the role and would continue advocating for Trump’s goals in the Senate.
Norman said he supported Trump’s priorities but questioned the president’s communication about Iran and said high gas prices remained a concern. He also said that, if elected, he would seek to work with Senate Majority Leader John Thune on passing the SAVE Act and could work to replace him if Thune did not pursue it.
