ICE canceled plans to use three Socorro warehouses as detention and training facilities and transferred them to the GSA for sale. Rep. Veronica Escobar and Socorro Mayor Rudy Cruz Jr. welcomed the decision, citing concerns about the facilities’ cost and effects on local infrastructure.
ICE has canceled plans to use three warehouses in Socorro as detention and training facilities. The warehouses, which the Department of Homeland Security bought for more than $122 million, were transferred to the General Services Administration to be put up for sale. DHS said it would use existing detention space with state and county partners.
Rep. Veronica Escobar said she welcomed the transfer but had warned that preparing the facilities would take years and cost millions more. Cruz said the proposed facility raised concerns about water, wastewater, emergency services, roads and public safety, and said the city would seek sale opportunities aligned with its economic development plans.
