Rep. Jim Clyburn is scheduled to speak at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum on July 7, discussing his book about Black South Carolina congressmen during Reconstruction as part of the nation’s 250th-birthday commemoration.
Clyburn’s event will include a performance of “Small Beginnings,” a play about Robert Smalls, followed by a discussion between Clyburn and ALPLM Executive Director Christina Shutt. The event is free, but attendees must reserve seats in advance.
Clyburn’s book, “The First Eight,” tells the stories of eight Black men elected to Congress from South Carolina during Reconstruction and considers why Clyburn, the ninth, was not elected until 1992. Shutt said the book’s subject connects with the museum’s exhibit on post-Civil War efforts to build a more equal America and the backlash that followed.
