Republican leaders in North Carolina’s 11th District will choose a November ballot replacement for Rep. Chuck Edwards, who dropped his reelection bid after an Ethics Committee recommendation. Several Republicans are considering the seat, while some state legislators have ruled themselves out.
Republican leaders from across North Carolina’s 11th Congressional District plan to meet on Aug. 10 to choose a candidate to replace Rep. Chuck Edwards on the November ballot. Edwards dropped his reelection bid after the House Ethics Committee recommended that he be censured for inappropriate conduct toward two female staffers. State Sen. Tim Moffitt and Army veteran Adam Smith said they may be interested, and Christian Reagan said he is definitely interested. The district party chair said the committee plans to announce its choice after the meeting.
Several western North Carolina legislators said they would not seek the seat, including state Rep. Jennifer Balkcom, who said she supports Moffitt; others had not yet indicated their plans. If the committee selects a sitting state legislator, that person must give up their campaign for reelection to the General Assembly. Residents interviewed in Hendersonville expressed disappointment with Edwards; resident Karen Pachete said she had planned to vote for him and might consider Democrat Jamie Ager.
