Thompson defeated Evan Turnage and Pertis Herman Williams III in Tuesday’s Democratic primary. Turnage campaigned on economic populism and on regulating Big Tech and artificial intelligence; Thompson said he supports people of all ages running for office and would continue working to give them that opportunity.
Political science professor Marvin King said Thompson’s long tenure had made him an institution in the state and that challengers had not effectively explained why voters should replace him. Voter Selket Myles said she supported Thompson because of his experience and work on the House Jan. 6 Committee. In other Mississippi primaries, Cindy Hyde-Smith defeated Sarah Adlakha, while Scott Colom won the Democratic Senate nomination.
