Nevada Republicans are preparing to choose between former state Sen. James Settelmeyer and David Flippo to replace retiring Rep. Mark Amodei. President Donald Trump’s endorsement of Flippo has made the primary a test of his influence among Republican voters.
Nevada’s 2nd District seat is open after Mark Amodei announced his retirement. Former state Sen. James Settelmeyer, backed by Amodei and Gov. Joe Lombardo, is running against David Flippo, a retired lieutenant colonel who has Trump’s endorsement. The primary is scheduled for Tuesday. Republicans have a registration advantage in the district, while Nevada Democrats say they hope to flip the seat.
The candidates have emphasized the economy, water and land use, as well as their experience and ties to the state. Flippo has criticized Settelmeyer’s voting record, while Settelmeyer has highlighted his own public-service experience and Flippo’s recent move to the district. Political science professor Jeremy Gelman said the primary reflects changes in Republican politics, where experience may not guarantee an advantage.
