Melat Kiros defeated 15-term incumbent Diana DeGette in the Democratic primary for Colorado’s 1st Congressional District, an upset that could signal a challenge to longtime incumbents in deep-blue districts. With 93% of votes estimated counted, Kiros had 51.3% and DeGette 41.7%.
The Associated Press called the race for Kiros after her lead widened as results came in. Kiros declared victory at a Denver watch party and said voters had sent a message to challenge Donald Trump, abolish ICE, pass Medicare for All and end the politics of the past. DeGette thanked supporters in a social media post and said she expected final results the following morning.
Wanda James, the other Democratic challenger, had 7% of the vote as of 11:30 p.m. The article says Kiros gained momentum late in the campaign, including an endorsement from Sen. Bernie Sanders, while DeGette’s supporters spent millions of dollars. It also describes differences between the candidates over the Israel-Hamas war and criticism of Kiros’s comments about the conflict.
