Three Republicans are competing for the nomination to challenge Sen. Mark Warner, but their fundraising totals and the state’s recent election history point to a difficult general election. A political science professor sees Kim Farington and Bert Mizusawa as leading the primary field.
Republican voters are scheduled to choose a Senate nominee in an Aug. 4 primary. The remaining candidates are Kim Farington, Bert Mizusawa and David Williams; state Sen. Bryce Reeves was among those who dropped out. The candidates have emphasized different themes, including affordability, national security and smaller government.
Campaign finance reports through March 31 showed Warner with nearly $22 million raised, compared with about $192,000 for Mizusawa, more than $125,000 for Farington and more than $55,000 for Williams. Political science professor David Richards said Farington and Mizusawa appeared to be leading the primary, and described the eventual Republican nominee as facing a significant financial and political disadvantage.
