The FCC did not grant Verizon’s initial application to end copper-based landline service across much of Virginia. Rep. Ben Cline said he had urged the FCC to review the application and welcomed the decision.
Cline said the FCC made its decision on Friday, after he wrote to FCC Chairman Brendan Carr earlier in September to seek answers and urge a review of Verizon’s application. Cline praised the pause, saying dependable communications are especially important in rural and mountainous communities.
Augusta County supervisors had also raised concerns, citing areas without cell service. Board Chairman Jeff Slaven told the FCC that landlines can work during power outages and that many residents cannot afford cellular plans. Cline said he would continue monitoring future changes.
