Brent Taylor and Justin Pearson won their respective primaries in Tennessee’s redrawn 9th Congressional District, setting up a general-election contest. The redistricting reshaped the state’s only House district then held by a Democrat and drew concern from some Memphis voters.
Brent Taylor won the Republican primary and Justin Pearson won the Democratic primary in Tennessee’s 9th Congressional District. The district had previously favored Democrats, but its boundaries were redrawn by Republican officials after a Supreme Court ruling weakened federal Voting Rights Act protections. President Donald Trump supported the redistricting as part of a plan to help Republicans gain a seat and retain their narrow House majority.
The new district stretches from Memphis through rural areas toward Nashville. Some Memphis voters said the changes could diminish their representation. After the redistricting, Democratic Rep. Steve Cohen said he would not seek reelection.
