Joshua Turek won the Democratic primary for Iowa’s open U.S. Senate seat, defeating Zach Wahls, and will face Republican Ashley Hinson, who won her party’s nomination. A national election forecaster moved the race from “Likely Republican” to “Lean Republican” after Turek’s victory.
With about 85 percent of the vote counted, Turek led Wahls 63 percent to 37 percent, a margin of more than 47,000 votes. Hinson defeated former state Sen. James Carlin in the Republican primary, leading 74 percent to about 26 percent with 86 percent counted. Turek and Wahls both urged Democratic unity after the result, and Wahls endorsed Turek.
