Donald Trump declined to say whether John Thune should remain Senate majority leader, while criticizing Thune’s approach to the filibuster and the SAVE America Act. Trump praised House Speaker Mike Johnson, and several House Republicans have separately urged Thune to step aside.
In an interview released Friday, Trump said he did not want to discuss whether Thune should remain majority leader, adding that they got along but had disagreements. Trump urged ending the filibuster and passing the SAVE America Act, and said the Senate should act on his priorities. He also praised Johnson and said he should remain speaker. Thune’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Thune has argued that ending the filibuster would let Democrats advance their agenda and rejected Trump’s call to fire Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough. Thune also argued that the Senate lacked the votes for the SAVE America Act and that canceling recess would not secure its passage. Representatives John Rose, Tim Burchett and Nancy Mace have called for Thune to step aside; Rose and Mace criticized him in comments cited in the article.
