Julia Letlow won Louisiana’s Republican U.S. Senate runoff, while Jamie Davis won the Democratic runoff. They advance to the Nov. 3 general election to compete for the seat held by Bill Cassidy.
Letlow defeated state Treasurer John Fleming, 57% to 43%, and Davis defeated Gary Crockett, 80% to 20%. The Associated Press called both races Saturday night. Letlow will face Davis in the general election, and the winner will replace Cassidy, who was eliminated in the May 16 Republican primary while seeking a third term.
The article reports that Letlow had President Donald Trump’s endorsement and that Gov. Jeff Landry raised money for a super PAC that ran ads against Fleming. It also describes the state’s new closed primary system, under which voters with no party affiliation could choose either party’s primary.
