Authorities say a Buffalo man was arrested and charged after allegedly threatening to kill Georgia Rep. Mike Collins and his son-in-law. Investigators said the threat stemmed from an online story they described as inaccurate.
The Butts County Sheriff's Office said investigators traced alleged threats against Rep. Mike Collins and his son-in-law to Anthony Lantrell Bennett of Buffalo. Authorities said Bennett acknowledged sending a threatening message and charged him with two counts of terroristic threats. Investigators said the threat stemmed from an online story they said was inaccurate, but did not identify the story.
The investigation began after the sheriff's office received information about a threat targeting Collins, who is also a candidate for the U.S. Senate. Investigators from the sheriff's office and Georgia Bureau of Investigation arrested Bennett in Buffalo with assistance from the FBI's Buffalo office. Sheriff Gary Long said threats against public officials or their families cross a line and are criminal acts.
