Missouri’s Supreme Court unanimously blocked the Trump-backed congressional map from being used in November and ordered a statewide vote on it. The ruling restores the previous map for the general election unless voters approve the new districts.
The Missouri Supreme Court ruled that the new congressional districts cannot be used in the November general election unless voters approve them. It found that opponents’ referendum petition was legal and timely, and that the map adopted after the 2020 census remains in effect for the election. Attorney General Catherine Hanaway said she would appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
The map had reconfigured the 5th Congressional District, held by Emanuel Cleaver. Republican candidate Rick Brattin won the primary in the reshaped district. Cleaver said voters had fought back against an attempt to silence their neighbors, while Brattin argued the decision disenfranchised primary voters who would be shifted to other districts.
