Sens. John Hoeven and Steve Daines and Rep. Julie Fedorchak introduced legislation on Sept. 23 to extend the Frontier Community Health Integration Project for five years, continuing support and flexibility for rural Critical Access Hospitals.
The legislation would extend FCHIP, which provides Critical Access Hospitals in frontier and hyper-rural counties with increased flexibility and Medicare reimbursement for telehealth, skilled nursing and ambulance services. Hoeven said the extension would strengthen rural care while testing ways to save Medicare costs.
Hoeven sponsored S. 5462 with Daines among its original cosponsors, while Fedorchak sponsored the House version. A summary provided by the lawmakers says FCHIP waives some Medicare payment rules to support nursing-facility beds, telehealth programs and ambulance services. The National Rural Health Association and hospital associations in North Dakota and Montana support the legislation.
