Former DOJ lawyer Elizabeth Oyer said she received death threats after testifying against Todd Blanche and blamed Sens. Eric Schmitt and Josh Hawley. The senators had questioned her about death-sentence commutations; Schmitt’s spokesperson and Hawley defended their conduct.
Oyer said in a YouTube video that death threats began after she testified against Blanche, who had been nominated to be attorney general. At the committee hearing, the senators questioned her about recommending that President Joe Biden commute 40 federal death sentences; Biden commuted 37.
Schmitt’s spokesperson said Oyer’s recommendations disregarded victims’ families and were extreme. Hawley said he was proud to tell victims’ stories and later said he had relied on memos Oyer sent. Oyer said Hawley misrepresented her views.
