Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis criticized the state Republican Party’s criteria for a gubernatorial primary debate, which would qualify only Rep. Byron Donalds. Donalds had declined to participate, while the party later rescinded another candidate’s invitation after he agreed to a separate debate.
DeSantis said the Florida GOP’s debate criteria could engineer an outcome and alienate voters. The party’s announced requirements include at least 10% support in a reputable poll, more than $10 million raised and at least 10,000 donors; only Donalds would qualify. DeSantis also said candidates could organize debates independently.
The party withdrew James Fishback’s invitation to its convention, citing his planned participation in an unsanctioned debate and alleged attacks on party members. Fishback said the party was banning him because he agreed to debate Donalds on CBS News. The primary is scheduled for Aug. 18.
