A leaked recording captures Ken Paxton alleging that John Cornyn wants him to lose Texas’s November Senate election; Cornyn’s camp denies the alleged conversation occurred. The story places the dispute amid a series of damaging leaks about Paxton’s campaign.
According to CNN’s account of the recording, Paxton told supporters that Cornyn had privately predicted Paxton would lose and said Republicans needed to be taught a lesson. CNN said it could not independently verify the alleged restaurant conversation, and Cornyn’s spokesperson said it never happened. A Cornyn strategist also rejected the claim, while noting that Cornyn supports the Republican ticket.
The article describes months of tension after the Republican primary, including Cornyn’s public criticism of Paxton’s campaigning and his lack of a formal endorsement. It also recounts other leaked remarks attributed to Paxton about control of his campaign, the convention, fuel prices, and federal spending, and reports Paxton’s criticism of Talarico and the candidates’ debate dispute.
