James Talarico has out-raised and outspent Ken Paxton in Texas’s closely contested Senate race, while polls show a tight contest. Republican leaders and strategists are concerned that promised financial help for Paxton has not materialized; Talarico’s lawyers also recently asked a court to unseal Paxton deposition transcripts.
Talarico has led Paxton in several polls and raised substantially more money, according to the article. Federal Election Commission filings through June 30 showed Talarico’s campaign with $21.5 million in cash on hand, compared with $1.76 million for Paxton’s committees. AdImpact figures also showed Talarico’s side spending far more on television advertising since June. The article reports that the Cook Political Report rates the race a toss-up, while recent polls have shown varying results.
Republicans have expressed concern about funding and Paxton’s prospects. Donald Trump headlined a Houston fundraiser whose proceeds went to the Republican National Committee, and an outside group supporting Paxton began a new ad buy. Senator John Cornyn said he would not campaign for Paxton, and one of Cornyn’s former staffers joined Talarico’s campaign. In late August, Talarico’s lawyers asked a court to unseal depositions Paxton gave in 2019 and 2022; Paxton’s campaign called the move a distraction.
