SOURCE CHECK
TAP FOR WHYNewsOne is an established national news publisher, but this article is an explicitly argumentative opinion piece rather than a reported news account. Its named author offers few citations or independently attributed sources for the factual claims.
- Source type — An established national digital news publisher provides a moderate baseline.
- Editorial standards — The argument is clearly presented as opinion, but the article provides little sourcing for its claims.
- Author attribution — The piece is attributed to a named author.
The article makes a clear argument and includes some biographical details, but it supplies few sources or supporting documents and does not present a response from the people or officials it criticizes. Its forceful opinion framing leaves important claims unsubstantiated within the piece.
HOW WE SCORE ↗The article is a one-sided opinion argument and does not include responses or counterarguments from Republicans or the officials it criticizes. It does briefly say Nordone should not be personally vilified and may be capable, but that qualification does not make the overall presentation balanced.
- Counterarguments presented — No opposing view or response from Republican officials is included.
- Loaded language — The article uses pointed and highly critical language throughout.
- Opinion vs reporting — The piece is explicitly argumentative rather than straight reporting.
- Source diversity — The argument relies mainly on the author's assertions and examples.
The article strongly criticizes Republicans, conservatives and Trump, while advancing a clear argument about racial double standards. Its language and selection of examples present a distinctly left-leaning perspective.
- Language tone — Uses sharply critical language about Republicans and the Trump administration.
- Framing — Frames the appointment as evidence of hypocrisy and racial double standards.
- Source selection — Presents the author's argument without opposing perspectives from Republicans or the officials discussed.
The author argues that Darline Graham Nordone’s temporary appointment to a vacant South Carolina Senate seat exposes what she sees as a double standard in Republican attacks on “DEI hires.” The piece contrasts Nordone’s family and political connections with conservatives’ criticisms of diversity initiatives.
The opinion piece says Darline Graham Nordone was appointed to temporarily fill the South Carolina Senate seat after her brother, former senator Lindsey Graham, died. It notes that she had worked as an optician and served on the South Carolina Commission for the Blind, but had never held elected office or served in Congress. The author argues that Nordone was selected for political convenience, her connection to Lindsey Graham and the symbolic value of her appointment—not because she had the most extensive qualifications.
The author frames the appointment as an example of what she calls “dynastic entitlement,” contrasting it with Republican attacks on Black professionals who are labeled “DEI hires.” She also points to Trump administration officials whose earlier careers, she argues, did not match their positions. The piece says Nordone should not be personally vilified and acknowledges that she may be capable, while arguing that conservatives apply different standards to white and Black recipients of opportunity.
