Robert White Jr. won the Democratic primary for Washington, D.C.’s delegate to Congress, setting up a November race to replace Eleanor Holmes Norton. The article describes the city’s elections amid disputes over federal intervention and D.C.’s autonomy.
Washington, D.C. Council member Robert White Jr. won the Democratic primary for the district’s delegate to Congress. Norton, who has held the position for 18 terms, decided not to run again. White said he would fight to preserve the city’s independence and seek statehood. The delegate can speak on the House floor and introduce bills but does not vote.
The article says federal intervention and affordability were prominent campaign issues. It reports that President Donald Trump sent the National Guard to Washington, downsized the federal workforce and threatened a federal takeover last week. In the mayoral primary, Janeese Lewis George and Kenyan McDuffie both spoke in favor of the city’s autonomy; the AP had not called a winner in that race.
