New York Democrats criticized President Donald Trump’s denial of disaster aid after a February blizzard, while Andrew Garbarino’s office said the state’s request did not meet federal requirements. The dispute also became part of the race between Garbarino and challenger Patrick Halpin.
Patrick Halpin, who is challenging Rep. Andrew Garbarino, accused the congressman of failing to use his committee chairmanship to help New York. Garbarino’s office said he had been engaged with the administration and that Gov. Kathy Hochul had not asked him for help; it also said most of the state’s request sought reimbursement for snow removal, which it described as a state and local responsibility.
The article says Trump denied disaster aid to New York and three other Democratic-led states, two days after approving aid for six Republican-led states. A FEMA spokesperson said politics was not involved. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand urged the administration to reconsider, and Hochul’s office said she was appealing the denial. The state application estimated $79 million in damage.
