Mitch McConnell is recovering in the hospital from an undisclosed medical issue and has spoken by phone with Senate colleagues. Their accounts say he was engaged and eager to return to the Senate.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune said he had a lengthy conversation with McConnell on Monday, and a spokesperson for Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso said the two spoke for about 20 minutes. The spokesperson said they discussed Senate races, the Graham Platner scandal and a Supreme Court ruling on coordinated spending limits, and described McConnell as fully engaged and eager to return.
McConnell was admitted to the hospital on June 14, but his spokesperson has not disclosed the reason. The article also recalls his hospitalization after a 2023 fall and two occasions when he froze while answering reporters; the attending physician for Congress later said there was no evidence he had suffered a stroke, seizure disorder or movement disorder. McConnell is not seeking reelection this year.
