Donald Trump called for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries to be charged with inciting violence over Jeffries’s “maximum warfare” rhetoric. Jeffries rejected Trump’s accusation and said he opposed political violence.
Trump accused Jeffries of inciting violence before an April assassination scare at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner and asked on social media whether Jeffries should be charged. Trump’s post juxtaposed an image of Jeffries with a “maximum warfare” sign and an image of alleged attacker Cole Allen at a Secret Service checkpoint.
Jeffries’s spokesperson pointed to a post in which Jeffries called Trump’s comments “another deranged rant.” Jeffries had previously defended his use of “maximum warfare,” saying the phrase originated with a White House staffer in the context of the redistricting battle. He has also said he opposes political violence.
