New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani appeared in a Knicks-themed ad backing Brad Lander, Darializa Avila Chevalier and Claire Valdez in their June 23 Democratic congressional primaries. The candidates made brief campaign pledges, and the ad cost $110,000, split among their campaigns.
The basketball-themed ad aired during the Knicks’ Game 1 win and showed Mamdani passing a ball to congressional candidates Lander, Chevalier and Valdez. Each made a campaign pledge: Lander said he would block billionaires from buying elections, Chevalier said she would abolish ICE, and Valdez said she would stand up against bad landlords and corporations. Mamdani called the slate a team and said it embodied a fight, selflessness and love of New York. The spot cost $110,000, split among the three campaigns.
Mamdani’s endorsements put him into several contentious Democratic primaries against incumbent or establishment-backed Democrats. The article describes Lander as challenging Rep. Dan Goldman, Valdez as running to succeed retiring Rep. Nydia Velázquez, and Chevalier as challenging Rep. Adriano Espaillat. Goldman’s spokesman criticized Lander for appearing in the ad alongside Valdez, while Antonio Reynoso, whom Velázquez had backed as a potential successor, praised the Knicks.
