James Talarico won the Democratic nomination for a Texas Senate seat, while Republican incumbent John Cornyn and Ken Paxton advanced to a runoff. The results set up the next stage of a closely watched race that could affect control of the Senate.
The Associated Press called the Democratic primary for Talarico, who defeated Rep. Jasmine Crockett. On the Republican side, neither Cornyn nor Paxton exceeded 50% of the vote, so they will compete in a runoff; Wesley Hunt finished third. With more than 80% of results in, Cornyn had 42.1%, Paxton 40.9% and Hunt 13.2%.
The article describes the contests as a test of the parties’ directions and reports that the Democratic primary was shaped by different strategies for winning Texas. It also notes confusion over polling locations in Dallas County and reports that combined spending in the primaries was close to $99 million as of mid-February.
