New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill campaigned in Massachusetts and New Hampshire for three Democratic congressional candidates with military backgrounds. The article also describes the candidates’ campaigns and reports a record number of veterans registered to run for Congress, according to the group With Honor.
Sherrill campaigned on Aug. 19 alongside Seth Moulton, Maggie Goodlander and Maura Sullivan, Democrats running for congressional seats. Moulton is seeking a Massachusetts Senate seat against Sen. Edward Markey; Goodlander is running in New Hampshire’s 2nd Congressional District, and Sullivan in its 1st Congressional District. The article says Sherrill’s PAC endorsed 13 Democrats with military or national security backgrounds. Sherrill told CBS News that veterans bring public-service experience and a willingness to challenge the status quo.
With Honor reported that 752 veterans had registered to run for the House and Senate this year, the highest number it had recorded since beginning its tracking in 2018; the group said 39% of veteran candidates were Democrats, also a record proportion. The article notes that Republicans hold majorities in both chambers and gives background on the candidates’ military and government service.
