Four senators introduced the PFAS Alternatives Act of 2026, which would fund research and development of PFAS-free firefighter turnout gear. The bill would also fund training and best-practice guidance for using the gear.
The senators said firefighters can encounter PFAS in protective gear, firefighting foam, and smoke. The bill would create a grant program for research, development, and testing of next-generation turnout gear, with up to $25 million authorized for that work from fiscal years 2027 through 2031 and another $2 million for training and best practices from fiscal years 2028 through 2032.
The article says the proposal is backed by the International Association of Fire Fighters and has companion legislation in the House led by Representatives Debbie Dingell and Sam Graves. The association’s president and a New Mexico firefighters’ representative voiced support for the measure.
