Maine Democrats publicized allegations that Sen. Susan Collins helped steer federal contracts to a donor, drawing a defense from her campaign manager. The dispute follows new ProPublica reporting and comes as Collins seeks reelection against Troy Jackson.
Maine Democrats held a news conference to highlight ProPublica reporting that a company executive told investigators Collins’s office sought a campaign contribution before meeting with him, and that a pro-Collins super PAC leader discussed federal contracts in connection with a donation. ProPublica also reported that federal authorities dropped a probe of Collins and other lawmakers after President Trump returned to office. Collins’s campaign manager, Steve Abbott, called the allegations recycled and denied that campaign contributions were required for meetings.
Abbott said Collins’s office advocated for projects it considered worthy and disputed claims about her dealings with the donor. ProPublica reported that the FBI found nothing implicating Collins or her campaign. Former Maine CDC director Nirav Shah said Collins and other elected officials should have spoken out against dismantling the FBI public-integrity unit. Collins is seeking a sixth term and faces Democrat Troy Jackson.
