With partial returns showing Joe Baldacci, Jordan Wood and Matt Dunlap close together, Maine’s 2nd District Democratic primary is headed to a ranked-choice runoff. The eventual nominee will face Republican Paul LePage in November.
With a little less than half the vote counted late Tuesday, Joe Baldacci had about 33%, Jordan Wood 30% and Matt Dunlap 28%; Paige Loud appeared likely to finish fourth. The Associated Press declared that the race would go to a ranked-choice runoff. Maine officials said final results could take up to two weeks because votes are redistributed until a candidate has a majority.
The winner will face Republican Paul LePage in the race to succeed U.S. Rep. Jared Golden, who is not seeking another term. The article describes disputes over outside support during the primary and says President Donald Trump praised LePage and criticized Dunlap in a social-media post.
