Troy Jackson appears to have a strong lead in the process to become Maine Democrats’ Senate nominee, after several rivals withdrew and county delegates backed him. The party’s nominating convention is scheduled for July 25.
Jackson’s campaign said it was shifting its full focus to defeating Republican Sen. Susan Collins, citing a decisive advantage in recent county-level caucuses. The campaign said 481 of 500 county delegates support Jackson; 601 delegates are expected to participate in the July 25 nominating convention.
Dan Kleban, Shenna Bellows, Nirav Shah and Jordan Wood dropped out of the race. Wood endorsed Jackson, as did Shah and Kleban. Jackson had previously called for Graham Platner to leave the race after Platner was accused of sexual assault by a former girlfriend; Platner denied the allegation and withdrew on July 10.
