South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster appointed Darline Graham Nordone to temporarily fill her brother Lindsey Graham’s Senate seat after his death. The state will also hold a special primary to choose a candidate for the November ballot.
McMaster said he asked Nordone to finish her brother’s term, and she said she would work to support the president and carry forward Lindsey Graham’s efforts. President Donald Trump said he had recommended her to McMaster, and Senate Majority Leader John Thune said the choice made sense to him.
State law allows McMaster to appoint a temporary replacement. Because Graham was up for reelection, the vacancy will also prompt a special primary, with the winner facing Democrat Annie Andrews in November; Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman were mentioned as potential candidates.
