Donald Trump endorsed Darline Graham for a full Senate term if she chooses to run, after South Carolina’s governor appointed her to finish her late brother Lindsey Graham’s term. The endorsement reshapes the contest to fill the seat, with a special primary scheduled for August.
Trump said Friday that Darline Graham had his endorsement if she runs for a full Senate term. Four people familiar with the deliberations said she had privately expressed interest. Other politicians considering a run include Reps. Russell Fry, Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman, and Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette. The special-primary filing period is July 21 to July 28, and the primary is scheduled for Aug. 11.
Gov. Henry McMaster appointed Darline Graham to serve the remainder of her brother’s term, which ends in January. Lindsey Graham died at age 71; funeral services are scheduled in Washington on July 28 and in South Carolina on July 29. Sen. Tim Scott said he would not endorse a candidate in his role as chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, though he might weigh in as a South Carolina voter.

44 OUTLETSTrump urged Darline Graham to seek a full Senate term and offered his endorsement after she was appointed to serve the remainder of her late brother Lindsey Graham’s term. Left-leaning outlets focus on Sen. Jon Ossoff’s accusation that Trump committed election fraud in Georgia, not the Senate contest. Center outlets largely treat the endorsement as a development in the race, adding appointment and primary context; one also weighs Graham’s government experience against her lack of legislative experience. Right-leaning outlets similarly emphasize Trump’s backing and the developing Senate race, generally without arguing for a candidate.
