Christian D. Menefee defeated Al Green in the Democratic primary runoff for Texas’ 18th District, receiving 69.4% of nearly 49,000 votes. He will face Republican nominee Ronald Whitfield in the November general election.
Voting results showed Menefee winning the runoff in the newly redrawn district, which includes parts of Harris, Brazoria and Fort Bend counties. His early-voting lead in Harris County was enough for him to declare victory before Election Day returns came in. In a statement Tuesday night, Menefee thanked voters and said he would work for the district in Washington.
The race pitted two sitting representatives against each other after redrawn congressional boundaries placed parts of Green’s former district in the 18th District. Menefee had won a January special election to fill the seat, while Green had represented the 9th District since 2005. Menefee now advances to the November general election against Whitfield.
