Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand said the party would not invest in Maine’s Senate race if Graham Platner remained the nominee, after reports of sexual-assault allegations against him. Platner denied the allegations and did not say whether he would end his campaign.
Schumer and Gillibrand called for Platner to withdraw from the race against Republican Sen. Susan Collins. Gillibrand’s campaign committee said it would not invest in the race if Platner remained on the ballot. Maine Democratic Party leaders and several Democratic lawmakers also urged Platner to drop out or withdrew their endorsements. Platner denied the allegations and said he was reflecting on the best path forward.
Politico reported that a woman accused Platner of forcing her to have sex with her nearly five years ago, and CNN reported further allegations. Politico said it reviewed documents and interviewed the woman; Reuters said it could not immediately reach her for comment. Maine law allowed Democrats to replace Platner on the November ballot if he withdrew before July 13, with a replacement nominee to be selected by July 27.
