Ruth Fortune qualified by petition for Connecticut’s 1st District Democratic primary, creating a four-way contest with incumbent John B. Larson, Luke Bronin and Jillian Gilchrest. She says the ballot-access process should be easier for future candidates.
Fortune qualified for the ballot after failing to secure a spot at the district’s Democratic nominating convention. She collected the required signatures across the district, becoming the first person to qualify by petition for a Connecticut primary challenge against an incumbent member of Congress. The primary is scheduled for Aug. 11.
Fortune said the petition process was difficult and argued that ballot-access laws should be addressed by state lawmakers. Larson congratulated her while criticizing Bronin, and Gilchrest also welcomed Fortune’s qualification. Bronin’s campaign said the larger field reflects voters’ desire for generational change.
