Seven Oregon lawmakers called on the Trump administration to end expedited “mega master” immigration hearings, arguing the practices undermine due process. They also sought changes to hearing notices, attorney access and the handling of cases.
The lawmakers wrote to Attorney General Todd Blanche and two immigration officials, saying that “mega master” hearings and other court practices risk preventing immigrants from receiving fair hearings. They described short-notice hearings in Portland and new in-person appearance requirements in Tacoma, while noting that some judges and government prosecutors participate remotely.
The letter called for an end to mega master hearings, more notice for immigrants, reduced hardships for attorneys and individual hearings free from political influence. The lawmakers requested a written response by October 15, 2026, detailing steps the Justice and Homeland Security departments would take.
