Ron Wyden and other Democratic senators urged the Trump administration to abandon a proposed rule that they say could deny tax credits to as many as 700,000 taxpayers, including DACA and TPS recipients and their families.
Wyden led a letter to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and IRS CEO Frank Bisignano opposing a proposed IRS and Treasury rule that would restrict access to the Adoption, American Opportunity, Child, and Earned Income tax credits. The lawmakers cited an estimate that the change could affect up to 700,000 taxpayers, including more than 300,000 people living in households with a DACA recipient.
The senators argued that the administration lacks authority to change tax law through regulation and said the proposal would harm lawfully present immigrants and their families. Catherine Cortez Masto and Dick Durbin also led the letter; Tammy Duckworth, Ben Ray Luján, Alex Padilla, Elizabeth Warren, Michael Bennet, and Patty Murray signed it.
