Estonia’s foreign minister praised a U.S. Senate Russia sanctions bill introduced by Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal, saying it could deal a significant blow to Russia’s economy. The bill has support from more than 60 senators and the White House, and still requires full Senate approval.
The statement says the Senate bill would impose tariffs on countries that continue buying Russian oil and gas or help Moscow evade sanctions. It also describes proposed restrictions on Vladimir Putin, other Russian officials, financial institutions, state-owned enterprises and companies supporting Russia’s defense industry.
Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna argued that energy exports help finance Russia’s war and called for continued international pressure. He also urged EU members to approve a further sanctions package. The U.S. bill’s next step is approval by the full Senate.
