Sen. Angus King’s office said the man fatally shot by an ICE agent in Biddeford was not the target of the arrest warrant, after Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin corrected an earlier account to King. King called for a transparent investigation as authorities investigate the shooting.
King said Mullin initially told him the man was the target of the immigration operation, then called back to correct that information. King said he would monitor the investigation and pressed for a full, transparent inquiry, noting that agents did not have body cameras. ICE said agents tried to stop a vehicle that attempted to flee and an officer fired out of concern for public safety; the agency said the shooting would be investigated by the DHS inspector general, while the FBI and local police responded.
Sen. Susan Collins called for a full and impartial investigation, and Gov. Janet Mills said state police were cooperating with local and federal officials. The Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition and Presente! Maine identified the man as a 26-year-old Colombian man and called for answers and a transparent account of the shooting.
