Florida Senate nominee Angie Nixon defended joining the Democratic Socialists of America while rejecting several of its platform proposals. Incumbent Ashley Moody and the Republican National Committee criticized Nixon’s affiliation during the campaign.
During an interview on “Meet the Press NOW,” Nixon said she joined the Democratic Socialists of America because of its positions on public housing, healthcare, homeless veterans and money in politics. She rejected abolishing the Senate or drafting a new constitution, opposed defunding the military, and said she supported scrutinizing defense spending. Asked about sanctions on Iran, she did not directly answer. Nixon also described herself as a capitalist who supports strong regulation.
The Republican National Committee accused Nixon of embracing far-left positions, and Moody called Nixon and her supporters people who wanted to “destroy this country.” Nixon said scrutiny of her DSA membership distracted from issues facing Florida voters. She advanced to face Moody after defeating Alexander Vindman; Moody was appointed to replace Marco Rubio, and the November winner will serve the final two years of Rubio’s term.
