Chuck Schumer reaffirmed his endorsement of Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner while declining to answer reporters’ questions about controversies surrounding the candidate. The exchange comes as Platner faces scrutiny over resurfaced online posts and other personal controversies.
At the Capitol, Schumer was repeatedly asked whether he remained satisfied with Platner’s explanations and whether Democrats’ support for him undercut their criticism of Texas Senate candidate Ken Paxton. Schumer did not address those questions directly, instead saying he had met with Platner and that Democrats would defeat Sen. Susan Collins and take back the Senate. After further questioning, he said, “As I said, I endorsed Graham Platner.”
The article describes criticism of Platner over a tattoo associated with Nazi imagery, resurfaced Reddit posts containing crude and inflammatory comments, and a sexually suggestive image on an account created in 2016. It also reports that Schumer had previously endorsed Maine Gov. Janet Mills, who left the race in April, leaving Platner the frontrunner in the Democratic primary.
