Anthony Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment 111 times and declined to answer questions at a Senate hearing on his pandemic response. Sen. Rand Paul said the committee would consider holding Fauci in contempt.
Fauci, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, declined to answer questions at a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs subcommittee hearing. He said he was following his attorney’s advice and argued that Paul had called him to provoke a statement that could support calls for his prosecution. Paul warned that Fauci’s refusal could have repercussions and said the committee would vote the following week on whether to hold him in contempt.
During the hearing, Paul ordered Fauci’s attorney, David Schertler, removed from the room. Sen. Josh Hawley challenged Fauci’s reliance on the Fifth Amendment, while Sen. Ashley Moody asked him about pandemic social-distancing guidance. Rep. James Comer had also threatened criminal action if Fauci lied during his testimony, and cited former President Joe Biden’s pardon of Fauci.
