A Public Policy Polling survey found James Talarico leading John Cornyn and Ken Paxton in separate hypothetical Texas Senate matchups. The poll also found the Republican primary headed to a runoff and showed mixed approval of President Donald Trump.
Public Policy Polling conducted the survey March 4–5, after James Talarico won the Democratic nomination and before incumbent John Cornyn and Ken Paxton were set to face each other in a May runoff. More respondents viewed Talarico favorably than Cornyn or Paxton, and more said they would vote for Talarico in either hypothetical matchup. The pollsters described the race as close and highly competitive.
Respondents were nearly evenly split on Trump’s job performance, with 49% approving and 48% disapproving. Trump had not endorsed in the primary, but said he would endorse a candidate soon and ask the other to drop out. Paxton said he would consider leaving the race if Congress passed the Save America Act, which the article describes as requiring proof of citizenship when registering to vote.
